Clustered Tote Bag



Work up a fun and textured bag using clusters - and lots of them!  Great for the beach, park, or any outing.  Work in two colors, a solid color, or more.  Great for Mother's Day or for yourself!

Clustered Tote Bag

Materials:
Sm skein 4-ply WW yarn, (Main Color) MC
Sm skein 4-ply WW yarn, (Contrasting Color) CC
Crochet hook, size H/8 (5.00 mm)


Finished Size: 11 1/4" W x 9 1/4" T
Gauge: 2 rows = 2 1/4"

Skill Level: Easy - Intermediate

Special Stitches:

3 Dc Cluster: (yo, insert hook in specified st, pull up a lp, yo, draw through 2 lps on hook) 3 times, yo, draw through last 4 lps on hook to complete the st.

Designer Note: Instructions are given per the bottom image for color placement.  However the bag is very versatile and color changes can be worked where desired according to one's preference.  See other customer images for more ideas.

Bag:  (Using MC)

Rnd 1) Ch 41; (2 sc) in 2nd chain from hook, sc in next 38 ch, (2 sc) in last ch, working on opposite side of beg ch (foundation ch), sc in next 38 ch; join with a sl st in first sc: 80 sc.

Rnd 2) Ch 2, 2 dc cluster in joining (counts as a beg 3-dc cluster) see special sts, sk next sc; * 3 dc cluster in next sc see special sts, sk next sc; rep from * around; join with a sl st to top of first cluster, dropping old color and picking up new color (CC): 40 clusters.  Fasten off old color.

Designer Note: Stitching may seem tight but will loosen as you work. 

Rnds 3-5) Using CC, make a beg 3 dc cluster in joining; * 3 dc cluster in top of next cluster; rep from * around; join with a sl st to top of first cluster, dropping old color behind on last round and picking up new color (MC): 40 clusters. Fasten off old color.

Rnd 6) Using MC, make a beg 3 dc cluster in joining; * 3 dc cluster in top of next cluster; rep from * around; join with a sl st to top of first cluster, dropping old color behind and picking up new color (CC): 40 clusters. Fasten off old color.

Rnds 7-14) Rep instructions for Rnds 3-6 respectively. Do not change color on rnd 14, last round.

Rnd 15) Ch 1, sc in joining; sc bet clusters; * sc in top of next cluster, sc bet clusters; rep from * around; join with a sl st in first sc: 80 sc.

Rnd 16) Ch 3 (counts as first dc); dc in next 23 sc, ch 13, sk next 13 sc (forming handle), dc in next 27 sc, ch 13, sk next 13 sc (forming opposite handle), dc in last 3 sc; join with a sl st to first dc: 54 dc.

Rnd 17) Ch 1, sc in joining; * sc in next st working in dc and ea ch of handle openings; rep from * around; join with a sl st in first sc: 80 sc.

Rnd 18) * Sl st in next sc; rep from * around; join with a sl st. Fasten off, secure ends.
